When you think of the word ‘technology’, what comes to mind? It may sound like something from a science fiction show or something that needs to be powered by electricity. Technology makes us think of the very complex, but energy does not have to be complex.
Technology is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications, whether in industry or in our everyday life. Basically, we use technology when we use our scientific knowledge to achieve a specific purpose. Well, there’s something more to it. Technology usually involves a specific device, but this device can be incredibly simple or amazingly complex. It can be anything, from the discovery of the wheel to computers and MP3 players.
Types of technology
Because technology can be so simple or so complex, there are many types of technology. One type is mechanical technology, which includes wheels, cams, levers, gears, belts and motors. Things that rotate or allow movement in one direction to cause a different kind of movement are mechanical. The wheel is probably one of the most important technological advances in the history of mankind, and yet it is super simple.
Perhaps the type of technology we are most familiar with in modern life is electronic technology, usually just called electronics, a complex form of technology that uses electrical circuits to achieve a goal. Electrical circuits can also vary in complexity. If you look at a printed circuit board with dozens of seemingly random paths mixed with different components, you know how complex electronics can be. But everything that is powered by electricity is electronic. These include computers, washing machines, dryers, MP3 players, car radios, televisions — everything that you plug into the outlet. You can also divide the technology into types based on the purpose. There are industrial and manufacturing engineering, medical engineering, communication engineering and others.
Industrial and manufacturing engineering is a technology with the goal of either manufacturing a product on a large scale, or performing another large-scale function where customers are not directly present. For example, they could make cars or generate electricity. Cars are made using mechanical robots, which is a very advanced technology.
Medical technology is technology that serves the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases. This can include things like MRI scanners that take pictures of the inside of the human body; ventilators that breathe for people; or even simply drugs and medications that people take to make them better.
Communication technology includes everything from the old-fashioned telegraph to telephones, mobile phones, communication satellites and the Internet. The Internet could be considered one of the biggest breakthroughs in communication technology in the last 50 years.
Technology is the work of man in its most ingenious form. Virtually everything that has changed the everyday life of people over the past 10,000 years is some form of technology.
